The New York Times Instagram page tells stories through the pictures it posts. Compared to the Times website itself, the Instagram account is unbiased and anti-political. It tells the stories of everyday people from all over the globe, with the occasional celebrity and major world event thrown in there. Because Instagram's users consist of primarily younger generations, the audience for this account is primarily younger generations, which is most likely the reason behind its variation from the Times website. The images are designed to capture one's attention and stop them as they scroll through their Instagram feed. While they may not stop long enough to read the brief, yet long for and Instagram post, caption, the pictures tell their own story. I follow the Instagram account myself and one of my favorite things about it is that I not only learn about what's going on in the world, but also how these events affect everyday people. The account is actually very similar to the Humans of New York account, in that they both use their images to tell people's stories, but while HONY reports, as the name suggests, on New York citizens, the New York Times covers people across the globe. The breathtaking photos and personal stories are what make the New York Times Instagram page so successful with over 3.6 million followers.
